How Good a Swimmer Should You Be Before Learning to Scuba Dive?
Sylvia Beach Apr 22, 2024
Most of us only truly explore about 1/3 rd of the planet. But those that scuba dive are able to see a part of the world that very few others are able to see. Scuba is the one activity that shows us, in person, the vast beauty of the underwater world.
But it’s also not something you should do without training and experience. Scuba is very safe when performed correctly, but that safety is still critical for making scuba diving something you can truly enjoy. One question that we are often asked before someone takes our beginning scuba classes is how important your swimming skills are, and how good a swimmer you need to be before you can go on scuba dives.
Swimming and Scuba Diving
In a way, scuba diving and swimming are related but different activities. Scuba diving gives you a tank to help you breath underwater, and a suit with flippers that makes the water easier to navigate. But swimming, of course, still plays a significant role in a person’s ability to navigate the water safely.
That is why being a proficient swimmer is still a fundamental part of scuba diving. Good swimming ability helps you handle yourself comfortably in open water scenarios. Swimming builds the endurance and strength needed to carry scuba gear and cope with potential currents. Being confident in the water reduces panic and increases enjoyment during dives.
But how good a swimmer do you need to be?
Typically, it is recommended that you are able to swim about 200 yards or so nonstop without any extra equipment, or about 300 yards with traditional snorkeling gear. You should also be able to treat water on your own for at least 10 minutes.
All of these are required by PADI as part of the certification process.
